Swiss Wine Event, Sungold Tomatoes, and a Corkscrew from Italy

In this week’s round-up: two very good reasons to leave your apartment and two very good reads for when you don’t.

First up, we’re hitting peak August produce mode with the long-awaited Jane Cooks For You x Caputo’s collab this Sunday (expect sungolds, arancini, and garlic scape everything), and a Friday night takeover at Fradei (sidewalk/stoop hang is encouraged), where we’re pouring Swiss wines that almost never make it onto by-the-glass lists.

On the editorial side, we’re resurfacing a favorite from the archives: Three Alternatives to White Burgundy because if you’ve looked at a Burgundy price tag lately, you know why it matters. And from National Geographic, a wild and wonderful dive into Azerbaijan’s wine history, shaped in part by German settlers in the 1800s.

We can’t forget our weekly cartoon by Cerise Zelenetz because this newsletter wouldn’t be complete without it. Cerise has been such an integral part of our brand’s identity and we’re lucky to have her on the team.

Plus: one last slushy-naengmyun brunch, a corkscrew that might work (but definitely looks good), and a wine club gift idea that actually hits.

Love you. Thanks for reading. See you next week! Or tonight at Fradei!

Three Alternatives To White Burgundy

With Burgundy prices climbing, this article we released a while back offers three compelling alternatives without the price tag. Darby Wagner explores how circumstance, curiosity and confidence can shape your next bottle pick. This article was the first in a series rethinking how we choose wine, starting with one of the most storied grapes of all: Chardonnay.

Explore Azerbaijan's Wine History And Its Unexpected German Past

Azerbaijan’s relationship with wine is a resilient love affair marked with cruel and often surprising twists and turns. National Geographic visited the city of Göygöl, in the country’s northwestern foothills, where, in the 19th century, German settlers forever changed the game for local winemakers.

Jane Cooks For You @ Caputo’s Fine Foods

This isn’t wine-related but it was toooooo good not to share. The long-rumored Jane Cooks For You x Caputo’s Fine Foods collab is happening this Sunday, August 10. Join them from 3–7pm (indoors and out) for a laid-back summer hang filled with peak-season produce and a stacked menu: roasted sungold tomato + basil butter, arancini with fresh tomato sauce, garlic scape knots, tomato salad with fried capers and garlic, antipasti pasta salad, sungolds with fresh mozz, basil lemon granita and whatever else they dream up between now and then.

  • Date: Sunday, August 10th

  • Time: 3pm - 7pm

  • Location: Caputo’s Fine Foods, 460 Court Street, Brooklyn, New York

  • Additional Information: here!

  • And tickets can be found here!

SWURL x Soil Expedition @ Fradei

We’re taking over the wine list with Soil Expedition at one of our longtime favorite restaurant/wine bars, Fradei, this Friday from 5:30–11pm. Reservations are already fully booked and standing space inside will be limited but there’s plenty of room outside to drink and snack on the sidewalk. Our nearest and dearest New York Metro Weather forecaster gave today a 9/10 so the sidewalk sounds pretty perfect in our opinion.

We’ll be pouring an all-Swiss by-the-glass lineup: wines from three of our favorite winemakers like Cherouche, Maison Vulpin and Lucas Madonia that rarely make it onto BTG lists and would usually run $30–35 per glass but we’re keeping it SWURL-friendly at $16–19.

  • Date: Friday, August 8th

  • Time: 5.30pm - 11pm

  • Location: Fradei, 99 South Portland Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

  • Additional Information: here!

Other News & Other Stuff & Other Reads

  • One more week of Nudibranch's lunch pop-up series! This Sunday, they have their last $35 brunch featuring ultra-refreshing naengmyun made with slushy machine broth, alongside banchan and desserts from Bahn by Lauren. Reservations can be made here!

  • Save the date: Il Buco in New York’s annual Pig Roast (don’t think this will be vegan-friendly unfortunately) is happening next month on September 21st. That’s all the information we have right now but once we have more we’ll share it here 🫡

  • Gift idea: MYSA, one of our favorite e-comm wine shops, offers a customizable wine club you can gift. Choose 3, 6, or 9 bottles and schedule deliveries monthly, quarterly or however you'd like. They always have great selections and take the guesswork out of picking!

  • Another gift idea: This striking corkscrew from Alessi, made in Italy. We’re not entirely sure how well it works but as far as design goes, it’s a stunner.

  • A newsletter we love: Cool Stuff NYC. A must-subscribe for anyone in the city, or anyone who just wants to stay in the know. Check them out here.
