The Perfect $11 Wine Glass, The Most Expensive Bottle Ever Sold, & Our Guide to Drinking Wine in the East Village

Plus: a bottle from 1869, the pizzeria everyone in the NYC wine scene is talking about, and more.

Hello! This past week, we tried a wine from 1869 that was brought over by a few winemakers in Piedmont. You probably have questions, we most certainly do. We’re working on getting answers and will report back once we have more information. It felt like what we hope wasn’t a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In today’s newsletter, we’re sharing how we spent a day eating and drinking wine in the East Village, along with news on the most expensive wine ever sold at auction and a spotlight on a retailer finding a cheeky way around tariffs.

Enjoy, and thanks for reading!

The East Village has such a high concentration of quality bars, restaurants, and everything in between that the odds of a good night are almost always in your favor. Instead of putting together another list claiming the “best,” “hottest,” or “top” spots, which can feel like a needless exercise in hierarchy, we mapped out a full day of eating and drinking in the neighborhood, the exact one we had on a dreary winter day. And one we’d happily do over and over again.

The 1945 Romanée-Conti represents the final vintage produced before Domaine de la Romanée-Conti replanted its oldest vines—grapes that had survived phylloxera, two World Wars and nearly a century of Burgundy history.

What Chris Leon and others we know in New York are doing is finding ways around tariffs by sourcing wine that’s already in the U.S. In our view, this also creates a clear opportunity for retailers, restaurants, and wine bars to differentiate themselves. An interesting read, but, of course, much easier said than done.
